Belize generally does not meet North American accessibility standards. Travelers should expect challenges, including: stairs upon arrival at the international airport, uneven sidewalks, narrow store aisles, and irregular or high street curbs. If ramps, lifts, wide entrances, and obstruction-free access are essential for your independence and safety, we strongly recommend planning carefully and confirming specific accessibility features with your hotel, tour operators, and transportation providers before booking.

The Consejo area, including Consejo Shores, is known as a peaceful, low-key coastal community that values neighborly security. At the core of this safe environment is the highly active Consejo Neighborhood Watch (CNW).
The CNW follows a simple and effective motto: "watchful neighbors deter crime." Its main aim is to create an atmosphere where residents are encouraged to look out for each other, clearly communicating that "if someone tries to commit a crime against one of our neighbors, we are watching and there is a good chance they'll get caught."
Residents are urged to participate in the association, share information, and report suspicious activity promptly. The CNW highlights the importance of basic security measures, such as exterior lighting, neighbor awareness, and simple home security, to keep the community peaceful and safe.
Consejo Shores is a private, planned development with 350 acres and 7,000 feet of coastline on Corozal Bay, featuring 273 residential parcels and over 160 established homes in the Relevant Developed Area . Hurricane and Storm Readiness
Belize is situated in the Atlantic hurricane belt. While Corozal District is relatively less prone to severe storm surges due to the shallow bay water and a crescent-shaped peninsula, preparedness is essential for wind and rain events.
FYI: Consejo Shores is the only waterfront community in Belize in which the properties are high and dry, averaging 7-8 feet above sea level.
Season: Officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk periods generally from late August through October.
Risk: Belize experiences a direct hit about once every 6–7 years, though the Northern area is relatively protected from the worst effects of storm surge.
Primary Concerns: Heavy rain and localized flooding often pose a greater threat than extreme wind damage, particularly in the immediate aftermath of a storm.
A robust preparedness plan is non-negotiable for property owners:
1. Construction & Infrastructure:
Build to Code: Ensure all construction meets or exceeds local hurricane building codes (concrete block and rebar construction is standard).
Secure Utilities: Secure propane tanks, water vats, solar panels, and satellite dishes to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles.
2. Emergency Supplies (Storm Kit):
Maintain a stock of non-perishable food, bottled water (at least 1 gallon per person per day for 7+ days), flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and prescribed medicines.
Back-up Power: Have a battery-powered radio and a generator with sufficient fuel to sustain power for at least a week, as power outages are common.
3. Property Management:
Tree Maintenance: Regularly trim large trees or clear overhanging branches that could fall during high winds.
Securing Outdoors: Store or secure all loose outdoor items (lawn furniture, garbage bins, tools).
Insurance: Critically, review your property insurance to ensure you have adequate coverage for named storm damage, wind, and flooding.
Belize's National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) issues warnings and advisories via local radio and online channels. Residents should monitor these sources closely during the season.
Land taxes are due every April 1st for the following 12 months.
Tax bills are not sent to you. It is the responsibility of the landowners to ascertain their taxes assessed and to pay them on time.
Typical annual taxes for residential lots, with or without homes, are approximately US$25-$50; interest is charged on late payments.

Upon Arrival: Present your import permit and veterinary certificate to the BAHA official, pay the fee, and be prepared for a possible inspection. Purchasing Property in Consejo Shores - Key Factors for Buyers
Belize is emerging as an attractive destination for remote workers, seamlessly blending a productive work environment with a tropical vacation lifestyle.
Key Advantages for Remote Workers:
Ease of Communication: English is the official language, which eliminates a significant barrier for many international remote workers.
Favorable Tax System: Remote workers earning income from outside of Belize are generally exempt from income tax under the country's territorial tax system.
Dedicated Visa Program: The "Work Where You Vacation" digital nomad visa allows for an extended stay—up to six months with the possibility of extension—far beyond the typical tourist stay. This program includes waivers for work and student permits (for children).
Affordable Cost of Living (Relative to many Caribbean destinations): While not the cheapest in Central America, the cost of living is generally considered lower than in many North American or European countries, allowing a modest salary to support a high quality of life.
Good Infrastructure: Major towns and tourist areas offer improving and reliable internet access, including fiber-to-the-home options, which is essential for remote work.
Tropical Lifestyle: Remote workers can enjoy a true work-life balance with a tropical climate, diverse natural beauty (beaches, jungles, the barrier reef), and a friendly local culture. The freedom to choose a workspace—whether a beachside cafe or a jungle retreat—enhances productivity and mental well-being.
Currency and Payment: The U.S. dollar is widely accepted, and the local currency (Belize Dollar) is pegged to the USD ($1 USD = $2 BZD), simplifying financial transactions.
For residents who wish to purchase items online and have them shipped to the Consejo area of Belize, there are reliable freight forwarders that bridge the distance from the U.S.
Common shipping companies that service this region include Belizean Queen Freight and U.S. Belize Trade, among others. These services streamline the process of getting goods from the U.S. to your door.
Tip: New residents are highly encouraged to ask neighbors for recommendations and the most current information regarding rates, shipping schedules, and customs clearance tips to ensure a smooth and cost-effective delivery experience.
